TERTIARY TEACHING
TFCENV91/92F: ENVIRONMENT & SOCIETY
Autumn & Spring 2021 & 2022, University of Auckland, New Zealand
The School of Environment offers a yearlong, survey course as part of the University of Auckland's Tertiary Foundation Course. This course introduces students to human geography (including development geographies, economic geographies, environmental geographies, and social & political geographies), mātauranga Māori related to te taiao (the environment), earth science, environmental science, and physical geography. We also have a large focus on study skills to help our students prepare to enter the general student body. This work is primarily led though weekly tutorials. In 2021, I was one of two staff members who was on both semesters of the course and co-led or led all tutorials. All tutorial activities and assignments were created or updated in 2021. In 2022, I was the course coordinator for the course, overseeing all aspects of the course from designing tutorials for the tutors to lead through to lecturing and offering pastoral care. In 2022, I expanded on the 2021 pilot material to create a complete tutorial curriculum.
EARTHSCI105(G): NATURAL HAZARDS IN NEW ZEALAND
Autumn 2017-2020, Spring 2020, Summer 2022, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
This is a large first year general education paper about natural hazards that occur in New Zealand. It is a survey course that exemplifies geological content with case studies from New Zealand and farther afield. Students participate in five laboratory sessions. The first four focus on specific hazards (landslides, volcanoes, coastal hazards, and meteorological hazards) while the fifth is a multi-hazard simulation exercise. In 2017 and 2018, I taught lab sessions and graded student work. In 2019, I took on the role of laboratory coordinator. In addition to my previous duties, I supervised the teaching assistants and revised the labs. Revisions included adding pre-laboratory assignments and group writing assignments to the first four laboratories. In 2020, I acted as course coordinator support, moved the course online for a COVID-19 lockdown, and offered office hours. In 2022, I trained a new teaching assistant and lead tutorials and supported the class as teaching shifted online (again).
ENVSCI101(G): ENVIRONMENT, SCIENCE, & MANAGEMENT
Spring 2020, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
This is a large, first-year, general education paper about environmental science. There are nine laboratories, two assignments, a midterm, and a final. I joined the course four weeks into the semester to aid the course coordinator, support students, attend laboratories, mark assignments, and oversee the tutor team.
GEOL0160E: VOLCANOES: WINDOWS INTO THE DEEP EARTH
Autumn 2013, Brown University, Rhode Island, USA
This is a first year seminar course offered by the (then) Department of Geological Sciences and taught by Prof. Alberto Saal. It covers basic volcanology in an intimate class setting. My role included grading assignments and holding office hours to answer additional questions and to offer one-on-one support.
ENVSCI203: MODELLING ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS
Spring 2020-2023, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
I have given an annual guest lecture titled "Modelling Volcanic Eruptions."
EARTH SYSTEMS FIELD CAMP & SEMESTER COURSE
2016-2020, Frontiers Abroad, Cook Islands & New Zealand
Frontiers Abroad is a study abroad program based in New Zealand. Students complete field camp prior to the semester. This Earth Systems program starts with a week in the Cook Islands looking at marine biodiversity and local cultural connections to the environment. The second week takes place on the North Island of New Zealand and focuses on Māori (the indigenous people of New Zealand) connections to the environment before spending a week looking at interactions between volcanic landscapes and the more general population. Week 4 then focused more on Māori culture before transitioning to the South Island. The following two weeks looks at sub-aerial biodiversity in the Southern Alps and marine biodiversity in a subtropical environment. Finally, the last week allows students to craft a semester-long research project and gather data for it. My role was to support instructional staff in all activities and to provide pastoral care. More recently, I have also been helping support student semester research projects and providing transitioning into New Zealand and pastoral care during the semester.
EARTHSCI301: ADVANCED GEOLOGICAL SKILLS & METHODS
Summer 2018, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
This is a third year, required field course for geology majors at the University of Auckland. It takes places in the Taupō Volcanic Zone and is their first exposure to volcanology field work. My role included working with students in one-on-one and small group settings and grading assignments.
EARTHSCI705: GEOHAZARDS
Spring 2017-2020, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
This is a postgraduate survey course of geological hazards and science communication. Students are required to participate in a field trip showcasing the Auckland Volcanic Field followed by a related all-day civil defense simulation exercise. My role in this course has been to support the field trip and revise the simulation exercise. Occasionally, I have also helped grade assignments. I have also lectured for this course.

EDUCATIONAL ENGAGEMENT*
Programmes I lead/led
SOILSAFE KIDS CO-LEAD
University of Auckland & GNS Science
Soilsafe Kids is the educational engagement branch of Soilsafe Aotearoa (soilsafe.auckland.ac.nz). It includes educational resources for schools (including videos, lesson plans, worksheets, and activities), short school and community workshops, and our flagship Three Day Programme. The Three Day Programme is a combined research and educational engagement offering designed to meet New Zealand Curriculum Level 2 achievement objectives and is composed of eight workshops spanning from Western soil science through te ao Māori (Māori worldview) lens on soil and soil (in) art. The Three Day Programme has been co-developed with community partners, and we aim to ensure equitable access to participating. Please see my publication list for research outputs related to Soilsafe Kids and my presentations list for conference and invited talks about Soilsafe Kids. Lianne Edwards-Maas' honours thesis developed a framework to evidence the reach of Soilsafe Kids.
RAPID CHARACTERISATION OF EARTHQUAKES & TSUNAMI- SCIENCE TO PRACTICE LEAD
GNS Science (contractor & staff)
Areas of Aotearoa New Zealand, such as Te Tai Tokerau Northland, are at high risk of being inundated by tsunami hours after a large earthquake they are unlikely to feel. The educational aspect of this role focuses on leading a team of scientists and community partners to increase seismic and tsunami risk awareness. To do so, I have developed a website, maintained social media channels, offered community and schools workshops, ran booths at large street fair styled events such as PolyFest and the Tauranga STEM Festival, sponsored the Central Northland Science Fair, and piloted school units on earthquakes and tsunami at New Zealand Curriculum Level 4. In this role, I also developed the educationally oriented events at the IAVCEI Scientific Assembly in Rotorua (2023) as part of VolcanoFest and host community events. Please see presentations for academic outputs from this work.
DETERMINING VOLCANIC RISK IN AUCKLAND (DEVORA), OUTREACH COORDINATOR
University of Auckland
The Auckland Volcanic Field most recently erupted approximately 600 years ago; since more than 1.5 million people have moved into the Auckland region. As outreach coordinator, I was in charge of delivering educational engagement workshops about the Auckland Volcanic Field, running booths and events for large events such as the Auckland Heritage Festival and the MOTAT STEM Fair, developing tertiary teaching activities to simulate a response to an Auckland Volcanic Field eruption, maintaining social media channels and the programme website, and overseeing research assistants helping during outreach events. While I developed new activities for DEVORA’s outreach programme, I did not create the DEVORA oureach programme, unlike the two programmes above. Please see my presentations for academic outputs related to this work.
